I know both Jet Li and Jackie Chan both started in the'old school' era of Kung Fu Cinema but they really made their bones in the 'new school era'.Now I am a old school Kung Fu fan and I do prefer that style of film compared to the 'wire fu' era of films these days. Not these films are any less entertaining its more of personal preference.
If you look at the old school fight scenes now verses a modern fight scene you will see a lot of differences. Take a look at Jet Li's Shaolin Temple, his first film. This is where Jet really showed his speed. When he acted out his training scene I've never seen Jet Li move that fast before. He controlled his weapons with speed and accuracy never before seen on film. Even faster than the great Bruce Lee with his nun chucks. As time went on and wires were brought into the fight choreography the fights changed. CGI also came into play. For me personally I rather just enjoy a raw wire free fight. It is evolution though.
Jackie Chan also displayed awesome wire free old school Kung Fu in his older films. Take the Young Master. Jackie Chan's final scene in that film was almost a half an hour of pure Kung Fu action. His choreographed it all himself. Pretty wicked stuff.
Maybe the old school style Kung Fu film will make a comeback one day and Jet Li and Jackie Chan can be apart of the renisonce.
